Diamond jewelry popular for Valentine's Day

With approximately $19 million spent on flowers in 2002 and $56 million spent on jewelry, Valentine's is indeed a special day for retailers.

'Valentine's Day is one of those fun holidays that most people look forward to,' says Diane J. Brisebois, President and CEO of Retail Council of Canada (RCC). 'And it's inclusive. Not only do romantic partners exchange gifts, so do friends, students, parents and children, and more. Plus, it's a great time for indulgence. Last year, consumers spent approximately $34 million on boxed chocolates and related confectionery.'

Here's an overview of some of the most popular Valentine's Day products:

Red roses still the tops

For those consumers looking to make a grand, romantic gesture, long-stemmed red roses are definitely the way to go. In fact, 65 per cent of all roses sold this Valentine's Day are expected to be long-stemmed and dark red. Colours for the remaining 35 per cent of roses sold are expected to be pink, peach and yellow.* If your special someone doesn't like roses, red tulips, red carnations and calla lilies are also expected to be popular choices.

Diamonds are everyone's best friend

With approximately $56 million spent at jewelry stores during the 2002 Valentine's season, it's clear that diamonds are everyone's best friend. According to a sampling of RCC members from across the country, diamond earrings, heart-shaped diamond pendants, and diamond engagement rings are just some of the items consumers will be purchasing this Valentine's Day. Toe rings, heart-shaped pinkie rings, watches and vintage earrings are expected to round out the list.

Pampering pays

Consumers spent about $34 million on health and beauty/spa products for Valentine's Day 2002, and this category is expected to be just as popular with consumers this year. Items that fall into this category range from pedicures for loved ones' tender tootsies to full-body massages.

Perennial favourites

Other products expected to fly off the shelves this Valentine's Day include lingerie and underwear (especially those with Valentine's motifs) cosmetics, perfume, and massage oils -- especially flavoured ones. Gift and card stores are also expected to be busy. For Valentine's 2002, consumers spent approximately $46 million at gift and card establishments.
